Octopus Paul is dead

Paul, an aquarium octopus, which correctly predicted the results of eight World Cup football matches in succession this summer, has died, the Sealife Oberhausen visitor attraction in Germany said.
Spain, in particular, hailed Paul as a national treasure after the mollusc twice picked the Spaniards as winners, first against Germany then over the Dutch in the final.
The octopus died in his pool in the night between Monday and Tuesday. The aquarium said there no suspicious circumstances concerning the death — although no one was expecting it.
“We all grew very fond of him and we will grievously miss him,” said Sealife chief executive Stefan Porwoll.
Paul, nearly three years old at the time of his death, was actually born in Britain — although this was of no help to the hapless English side during the football tournament. Scotland and Wales did not even qualify.
Aquarium staff employed Paul as an oracle by giving him a choice of two plastic buckets, each marked with a national flag, and seeing which one he reached into first for his favourite food, shellfish.
Some of the losing nations at the football fest in South Africa blamed Paul for their defeat and wanted to turn him into calamari rings. Others offered high sums to buy the aquarium star, but the Sealife chain said he was too old to go.
Meanwhile, in such esteem was Paul held in Spain, a town wants to preserve Paul’s body in a yet-to-be-built aquarium and octopus museum.
The north-western town of Carballino adopted Paul as its honorary citizen in July, a measure, which helped to nearly double the number of visitors to its annual octopus festival to about 100,000.
Mayor Carlos Montes said he had now contacted the German aquarium again in an attempt to acquire Paul’s remains.
However, Paul is to be cremated, and the urn containing his ashes will form the centre of a shrine surrounded by film clips of his tentacles successfully predicting match results by pointing to the flag of the winning country.
The Sealife aquarium is already raising a “Paul II”, in time to predict the 2012 European football championship.

Team Declared For India - New Zeanald Series

Left-handed opener Gautam Gambhir and paceman Ishant Sharma returned after injury lay-offs as the national selectors on Monday announced a full strength 15-member Test squad for next month’s series against New Zealand.

Gambhir and Ishant, who had to sit out of the second and final Test against Australia at Bangalore because of injury, have recovered sufficiently to be named in the squad, which has no new faces.

While upcoming batsman Cheteshwar Pujara has been retained, two other youngsters Abhinav Mukund and Jaidev Unadkat have been left out of the team announced by the BCCI.

Yuvraj Singh again failed to find favour in the Test squad, with the selectors opting for Suresh Raina and Pujara as the middle-order batsmen, both of whom have done reasonably well when provided with the opportunity.

The team, to be captained by MS Dhoni, has three fast bowlers in Zaheer Khan, S Sreesanth and Ishant and three specialist spinners comprising Harbhajan Singh, Amit Mishra and Pragyan Ojha.

The Indian batting order looks formidable as it has stars like Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, VVS Laxman and Virender Sehwag, who have all been in fine nick in recent times.

The return of Gambhir, who was laid low by a knee injury, means that opener Murali Vijay will have to sit out of the series commencing on November 4 in Ahmadabad.

“The team has performed extremely well against the Australians in both the Tests and one-day series, particularly the Bangalore Test. Our junior players have gelled well in the middle-order with the seniors. Our bowlers have done a remarkable job.

“Going by this, we have picked the team for all the three Tests. I am confident that our players will continue their victory march,” chief selector Kris Srikkanth told reporters.

“Our bench strength has come good and it was there for all to witness. This is a good sign for Indian cricket. Like it is said that the best player win, I must say let the best team (India) win,” Srikkanth said adding the team for the one-day series will be picked later.

The Test series will be followed by five one-day series — Guwahati (Nov 28), Jaipur (Dec 1), Vadodara (Dec 4), Bangalore (Dec 7) and Chennai (Dec 10).

Test squad: Mahendra Singh Dhoni (captain), Virender Sehwag (vice-captain), Gautam Gambhir, Murali Vijay, Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman, Suresh Raina, Cheteshwar Pujara, Harbhajan Singh, Zaheer Khan, Ishant Sharma, S Sreesanth, Pragyan Ojha and Amit Mishra.

India and Australia to try new faces in one-day series

Australia will rely on an experimental line-up as they seek to atone for their Test series defeat in India by winning the one-day leg of the tour.

The tourists have included uncapped all-rounder James Hastings and paceman Mitchell Starc in their squad.

They have also given opener David Warner a chance to prove he is more than just a Twenty20 specialist.

India, who won the Test series 2-0, are set to try out young batsmen Shikhar Dhawan and Saurabh Tiwary.

Dhawan, 24, and 20-year-old Tiwary are both left-handed, both free-scoring at domestic level and were team-mates for Mumbai Indians during last month's Champions League T20 competition.

But they have big shoes to fill with the Indian selectors having chosen to rest Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir because of injury concerns.

Having slipped to fifth in the Test rankings, Australia will be keen to bolster their position at the top of the one-day list, as well as gaining valuable preparation for the World Cup, which will be jointly staged by India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh from february to April next year.

However, they will be without Ricky Ponting, Shane Watson, Mitchell Johnson and Ben Hilfenhaus, who are all being rested ahead of the forthcoming Ashes Test series against England.

The absence of Johnson and Hilfenhaus means Doug Bollinger, who had to sit out he second Test because of injury, and Clint McKay will lead the seam attack with left-armer Starc providing the back-up.

Plans to give another 20-year-old, James Pattinson, his first opportunity were scrapped because of a back problem, prompting the selectors to call up Hastings as a late replacement.

But there is good news for batsman Callum Ferguson, who makes his international comeback after undergoing reconstructive surgery on his right knee, 17 months on from his last appearance.

Double trouble for Australia in Bangalore

Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar will never forget this trip to Bangalore. The day he arrived at the Garden city from Mohali, he won the ICC player of the year award.

He followed it up by completing his 14,000 Test runs on Sunday and the next day he scored his 49th Test hundred and is just nine runs short of his sixth double century.

On Monday, the Australians were left wondering as how to get Tendulkar out with the Little Master playing a chanceless innings of 191 runs to put India on top in the second Test match at the Chinnaswamy Stadium.

Tendulkar along with Murali Vijay, who scored his maiden Test century, took India into a comfortable position as the hosts ended Day Three on 435 for five in reply to Australia’s 478 runs. India now trail by 43 runs and the bad news for the visitors is that Tendulkar is still at the centre along with skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who is batting on 11.

Tendulkar and Vijay added 308 runs for the third wicket off which 218 were scored on Monday to really make it a day that the Australians would like to forget at the earliest. Though Vijay was unlucky to be out on 139, his innings was overshadowed by Tendulkar’s knock.

Right from the morning it looked like it was going to be Tendulkar’s day. He started the day with a boundary of the very first ball and two balls later brought up his fifty with a paddle sweep.

From then on there was no stopping Tendulkar. While his first 50 took 91 balls, Sachin raced to his next 50 in just 66 balls to bring up his 49th century in style hitting Nathan Hauritz for two sixes over wide long-on.

Tendulkar and Vijay also ensured that the tradition set in the first two days was followed as they batted through the morning session that once again turned out to be wicketless for the third successive day.

Post lunch, Vijay stepped on the accelerator, while Tendulkar played the sheet anchor’s role.

The Tamil Nadu batsman, who scored his third test fifty in the morning session, made full use of the opportunity as he smashed the bowlers all across the ground to get past his previous highest score of 87 runs.

Once in the nervous nineties, Vijay took 43 balls to get to his maiden century and he celebrated it in style by jumping in the air. In fact, it took him 11 balls to move from 99 to 100.

The two made the day more agonising for the visitors as Australia failed to get a breakthrough even in the second session.
The last session started with yet another milestone for Tendulkar, who reached 150 runs for the 20th time in his career. This added another feather to his already overcrowded cap as he broke Brian Lara’s record of going past the 150-run mark 19 times.

He was replaced by debutant Cheteshwar Pujara, who started on a good note hitting a beautiful cover drive off the second ball he faced in Test cricket. But he was unlucky to get out the very next ball after the Johnson delivery kept low and shot across
towards a surprised Pujara, who crouched and tried
to get some bat in the way.

But he couldn’t and his debut lasted for just threedeliveries.
Suresh Raina, who has been in good form, played some glorious shots. At one stage it looked as if Raina along with Tendulkar would see offthe day’s play after the Australian’s were forced to deploy spinner from both ends due to fading light.

But Raina played a loose shot off Michael Clarke only to hit it straight to mid-on where Ben Hilfenhaus made no mistake and the left hander departed for 32 (43b 5x4).

While wickets kept tumbling at the other end, Tendulkar didn’t lose his concentration and carried on minting runs against what looked like a helpless Aussie attack until the umpires decided to call it a day due to bad light with four more overs left.

Watch The Magic Of Big Bachchan Unfold on KBC 2010

KBC is set for a big bang opening and zillions of fans of Mr. Amitabh Bachchan  are in for a special treat as the channel & India's biggest superstar ever are pulling all plugs to ensure that the opening of Kaun Banega Crorepati 2010 is unlike anything seen on Indian television before.

The entire making of the set was created on a very short notice, yet no corners were left untouched and everything was looked after to the hilt.

The perfectionist in Mr. Amitabh Bachchan along with his sense of humor and boundless energy during the shoot kept everyone on their toes and in high spirit. His creative suggestions were really appreciated by everyone and motivated them to give in their best.

He was so enthused about the opening song that he jammed with composers Vishal-Shekhar till the wee hours of the morning to complete it. The music video is directed by India's contemporary dance guru; Shiamak Davar who was extremely excited to watch the legend perform in front of his eyes.

A very touched Shiamak said 'Recreating the best of Mr. Bachchan's work was a challenge. That's why I decided to do a piece that would reflect Mr. Bachchan's journey as a poet to an actor to a star to a superstar and finally as the host of Kaun Banega Crorepati 2010. The opening for Kaun Banega Crorepati is a tribute to Mr. Bachchan's best work, something never seen or experienced before. I am honored to have gotten the opportunity to direct him for this.'
